Udham Singh Director Shoojit Sircar Reveals He Waited For 21 Years To Make This Film
Vicky Kaushal’s Udham Singh is one of the most awaited films of the year. The actor plays the role of revolutionary Sardar Udham Singh in the biopic, directed by Shoojit Sircar. Vicky’s overall look and the trailer has left the fans eagerly waiting for the film as it features Vicky in a never-seen-before avatar focusing on his undeterred mission of avenging the lives of his beloved brethren, who were ruthlessly murdered in the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre of 1919.

Now, in a recent interview, Shoojit Sircar opened up about his much-awaited Sardar Udham Singh biopic and revealed how he has been wanting to make a debut as a director with this film, however, couldn’t do so due to lack of funds.

The director revealed that he held back on it for 21 years and it’s finally gearing up for a digital premiere on Amazon Prime on October 16. Recalling his initial days in Mumbai, the director said that he wasn't sure how to make this film and he was really passionate about the subject. “Like Sardar Udham Singh, even I waited for 21 years to make this film,” he informed as quoted by Pinkvilla.

While the film was made for a theatrical release in 2019, it has now taken a digital route. Shoojit was also asked about his decision to bring his long-lasting dream on the digital platform. “There is a destiny for every film. Sardar Udham’s destiny was to premiere on Amazon. I shot this film for the cinema, but I am not guilty that I am releasing it on OTT. I am very impatient as a person when a film is ready. I actually wanted to get this film out and we all saw what happened with Gulabo Sitabo. The digital premiere gave it a bigger reach. I thought this film needed a huge global platform apart from just the Indian territories. Yes, I am surely going to miss the theatrical experience, but this is not a compromise in my cinematic narrative,” he explained.

Vicky will be seen in this biopic playing the revolutionary freedom fighter. While the filming was completed in December 2019, post-production took a long time and was further slowed by the pandemic. The film was initially scheduled to be released on October 2, 2020. However, due to the second wave of the Coronavirus pandemic, the film's release date was pushed back to January 2021. The film is slated to release on Amazon Prime Video on 16 October. The film was shot in Russia, UK, Ireland, Germany and North India. It’s set against the backdrop of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre with Vicky Kaushal as Sardar Udham Singh.
